The Rise of Social Media – Hype or Reality?

I think it’s pretty clear that social media (or social networking, or web 2.0/3.0) has shook up the world. The following video by Erik Qualman has very good statistics on the impact that social media has had on businesses and consumers. Titled “Social Media Revolution”, it’s done in a way that garners peoples’ attention and has an impressive 1.3 million views on Youtube alone.

As a result of this wave of social media, consumers are being more empowered, and brands have found out (some the hard way) that irreversible brand damage can be made by a single bad experience by a prominent social media user. New channels have been made as well, as consumers now find themselves able to talk to brands directly and give them almost immediate feedback.

The problem is – is this rise in social media just plain hype and a passing fad? Or will it remain and stay?
